Region-Locked Keys: Will an EU Key Work in the UK?

25 October 2026

Cheap game keys often come with a label like Global, Europe, UK, US or a country name. That label is the key's region, and it decides where the key can be activated. Here's what it means for UK buyers.

What is a region-locked key?

Publishers sometimes set different prices in different countries. To stop keys bought cheaply in one country being used everywhere, some keys only activate on accounts from a certain region. That's a region-locked key.

Will an EU key work in the UK?

Usually, yes, but not always. The UK is generally treated as part of the European region by Steam, the console stores and most publishers, so "Europe" keys normally activate on UK accounts. A small number of games and publishers treat the UK separately, and some listings are marked "EU (without UK)" or similar.

That's why Zemly labels Europe keys "Usually works in the UK", and UK or Global keys "Works in the UK". If you want to be certain, pick a UK or Global key, even if it costs a little more.

What about consoles?

Console codes have regions too, and it matters most for gift cards and subscriptions:

On Zemly, gift cards are matched to your country automatically, so you only see the ones that will work for you.

Can I use a VPN to activate a locked key?

Some listings say "VPN required". We leave those out: using a VPN to get around a region lock usually breaks the platform's rules, and it can lead to the key being revoked or your account being restricted. It isn't worth the risk.

How to avoid region problems

  1. Prefer UK or Global keys for a guaranteed match.
  2. Treat Europe keys as "usually fine", and check the store's product page if you're unsure.
  3. Avoid country keys for other countries, however cheap.
  4. Read the store's own page before paying. It is the final word on where a key can be activated.

Every price on Zemly shows its region, and keys that won't work in the UK are hidden unless you choose to see them. Start with popular games.
