If you've moved from a PS4 to a PS5, or you're buying a game for someone who has, you'll want to know which version to buy. Here's how PlayStation handles the two generations.
Do PS4 games work on PS5?
Almost all of them do. The PS5 is backward compatible with the vast majority of PS4 games, both digital and on disc. Sony keeps a short list of exceptions, so if it's an older or unusual title, it's worth a quick check.
Do PS5 games work on PS4?
No. A PS5 game needs a PS5. If someone only has a PS4, make sure you buy the PS4 version.
PS4 version, PS5 version, or both?
Games are sold in a few different ways:
- PS4 only: plays on PS4, and on PS5 through backward compatibility.
- PS5 only: plays on PS5 only.
- "PS4 & PS5": includes both versions, so you get the best version for whichever console you use.
Some PS4 games offer a free or paid upgrade to their PS5 version. The rules are set game by game, so check the game's own store page if that matters to you.
Buying PlayStation keys
Key stores sell PlayStation games as codes you redeem on your PSN account. Two things to check:
- The version: PS4, PS5 or both.
- The region: PSN codes are tied to your account's region. For a UK account choose UK or Europe codes, and avoid codes for other countries.
On Zemly, the PS5 and PS4 tiles on each game page list only the keys made for that console, and each offer shows its region. Keys that don't state which PlayStation they're for are left out.
PlayStation Plus
Many PS4 and PS5 games are also included with PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium. If you play lots of different games, a membership might be better value. Compare PlayStation Plus prices.
